Amanuensis required (posted 24.04.08)
My wife knows a retired Japanese professor of English who wishes to write (and publish) another book - in English. Unfortunately, she is somewhat disabled and now finds it difficult to type. As a result she intends to dictate the manuscript onto tape. She therefore needs someone to transcribe the resulting text onto a computer and at the same time tidy up the English. She lives near the city centre (off King St.) and is expecting to pay for the service. If anyone is interested please could they contact Ian Wilson (desk 46 or phone 572535).

Friday 14 March, 1pm to 2pm, Upper Hex
Bibleworks training session.
This Friday, I will be leading a session on Bibleworks at lunchtime in the Upper Hex. It is designed both for people who are completely new to Bibleworks and for those who want to go beyond the basics, and so I aim to cover a lot of ground very quickly and introduce you to the full range of BW's capabilities (I did this session at Oak Hill and was amazed how much can be covered in an hour). If you missed David I-B's session last month, or if you want to take things further, please do come along.
Please bring your own lunch, and if you have Bibleworks on a laptop you'll find that useful to bring too. We'll aim to start promptly at 1 to make best use of the time.
If you want to know beforehand what will be covered, drop me an email (via the address on Who's Here) and I'll send you a copy of the handout. It would be useful to have a rough idea of numbers so I know how many handouts / desks to put out, so please email me if you'd like to come (it won't commit you). But feel free to come anyway even if you don't let me know in advance.

(No knowledge of American football required to attend, though Seulgi will demonstrate how shamelessly he cheers for the Patriots). We need to know who will likely attend, though. Those interested please send Ryan a quick email (ryreeves4@hotmail.com). Also, it's "bring your own snacks", so break out the chips and dip or whatever you care to bring along. 31 Jan 08 Pancake party Just 36 people have told me that they are coming to the pancake party tomorrow in the Upper Hexagon at 5.45pm, so feel free to invite other friends! 22 Jan 08 Ladies' Term Card Ladies_Term_Card_Spring_2008.doc 22 Jan 08 You’re invited to an ‘international pancake party’! We’re planning a bring and share ‘international pancake party’ (recipes vary – bring your favourites!) at 5.45pm on Friday 1st February. 'Following on from his recent book on British Brethren history, Gathering to His Name, Dr Tim Grass, Associate Tutor in Church History at Spurgeon's College, London, has been commissioned by Paternoster Publishing to write a biography of the Scottish biblical scholar F.F. Bruce (1910-90), who played a seminal role in the development of Tyndale House and the Tyndale Fellowship. He would be delighted to hear from anyone with recollections, letters, copies of obscure articles, photographs, or manuscript material, and to learn about the impact which Bruce and his writings made on people in various parts of the world. He would also like to know if you are willing to be interviewed regarding your recollections of Bruce, probably by e-mail unless you live in the UK - grass.family at tesco.net

16 Jan 08 4QMMT
Since the NT seminar next Tuesday 22nd is going to be about 4QMMT I thought it might be a good idea to read the text beforehand at 1:00 on Tuesday in the Hex. DJD vol X (1994), 44-63. ET I guess and some Hebrew for the last section if there is time. For basic info see here: http://www.tyndale.cam.ac.uk/Tyndale/staff/Head/4QMMT.htm
11 Dec 07 SBL/ETS/AAR
The purpose of this post is twofold. First, to encourage researchers at Tyndale House to submit papers for the annual SBL/ETS/AAR meetings. Second, to encourage those who are going to these meetings to coordinate their travel bookings.
These meetings are a key place for networking, keeping tabs on current scholarship, and buying lots of cheap books. They also provide academics with a place to test research and build a résumé by presenting a paper in a peer-reviewed context. Likewise, this is an opportunity to overcome fears of speaking in an academic context. Generally, academics are kind to student presenters and provide a great deal of valuable feedback. Even if you do not present, your presence is very valuable to those who are presenting.
What you need to know about presenting a paper at SBL for the first time:
+You will need to submit the entire paper to a relevant section before the 1 March deadline.
+Educational institutions will typically fund your costs if you present a paper.
In anticipation of next year’s meeting(s), and would encourage you to 1) start preparing a paper to submit before the 1 March deadline (for SBL -- program units listed here), 2) sign up for the early-bird, super-saver discount (only $50 for a student, SBL), 3) coordinate housing and travel with Christian or Myrto. All the specifics on ETS/AAR are not yet online.
We are arranging adjacent hotel rooms in the Colonnade Hotel for SBL, and will be planning flights and taxis. The Colonnade is immediately across from the conference center, but is significantly cheaper than the hotels attached to the conference center. Let us know if you are going so we can organize the rooms (you will want to do this before you register). Also, let us know if you are interested in attending ETS or

9 Dec 07—Tyndale Family Christmas Children's Choir/Pageant< xml="true" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" prefix="o" namespace="">
The annual Tyndale Family Christmas event is this Sunday, Dec 9, at 3:00 pm.
As part of this celebration, the children will be producing a musical program, including a traditional pageant. While the program will be simple, we hope that it will be meaningful, fun and well done.
All children are invited to participate, with something to do for everyone—even our teens; and our youngest children will participate as they are able.
Here is the rehearsal schedule (in the upper hex):
- Thursday 5:30-6:30 (sorry for such an inconvenient time, but this seems best, juggling around library hours and offsite families; if there is a more suitable time, let me know right away)
- Saturday 10:00-11:30
- Sunday 2:00 (just prior to the party)

15 Nov 07 - Cambridge Christmas Lights
Join us this Sunday (the 18th) to go see the Christmas lights being switched on at Market Square. Enjoy the parade and other festivities before the lights are officially switched on at 17.00. We will meet as a group in the downstairs common room at 16.00 to walk over together, enjoy the festivities and watch the lighting ceremony. Then we'll walk back to Tyndale House and meet in Flat 10 (the Lowery's flat) for coffee, tea, and (possibly) light snacks afterwards. Please email to let us know if you're interested in coming at this email: germandanny@gmail.com . That way we'll have an idea of how many might show up to our flat (plus we don't want to clean up if no one is coming!). Thanks, Daniel.

27 Oct 07--Backrest found
In a round about way, a support back rest for an office chair has come into my possession. I suspect someone left it lying around at someone's home who, in an attempt to find the owner, gave it to someone else who gave it to one of my kids.
If it is yours, pick it up on my desk anytime (#41). If it is not yours but you could benefit from its use, let me know and I'll give it to you if no one claims it.

Tyndale Party on Saturday: By now many have noticed the "New National Holiday" posters around Tyndale House and you've probably also noticed that I want Jonny Wilkinson to marry me (thank you, Kevin and sorry, Lauren). THERE WILL BE NO BBQ FUNCTION ON FRIDAY, so everyone should make plans to attend the party on Saturday. Bring a sweet or a savory and come enjoy the fellowship (Jonathan Chaplin and Fiona Craig want me to emphasize there will only be "fellowship" for those dressed to support the English side). Please come even if you don't care about rugby—you can leave when the match starts. Come to enjoy the food, fellowship and games, too (eg, pin the tail on the warden, etc.). Come dressed as a fan, the crazier the better. Please direct queries to Daniel or Lauren Lowery at: germandanny@gmail.com .

8th Oct. Language Reading Groups
I'm giving thought to running a reading group or so some time in the next academic year and am trying to assess the relative demand there is for various groups. Possibilities are: Advanced Greek (reading patristic texts); Elementary Syriac; Intermediate Syriac (go straight to reading texts assuming knowledge of basics); Ugaritic (inductive introduction). I'd be grateful for indications of levels of interest in any of these. Pete Williams
8th Oct. Greek Learning Group
Just a note to say that a group for learning Greek (NT/Koine) for complete beginners is going to be running in the Upper Hexagon from 4:30 - 5:30 on Monday afternoons. Open to anyone. Email me if you are interested: pmh15@cam.ac.uk (Pete Head).
7th Oct. Hebrew Reading Group
It seems not everyone is aware of the Hebrew reading group which has been meeting on Monday lunchtimes, 1-2pm in the Upper Hexagon. Anyone is welcome - either to contribute or just to listen in. This Monday, 7 October, we will be picking up at Deuteronomy 5:26 or thereabouts.
Some prep beforehand on the passage will be useful (e.g. read through and look up any tricky words or grammar) but even if you don't have time for that you're still very welcome. We're going at a rate of about 15 verses each time so I suggest preparing as far as Deut 6:9 or so.
Please email Chris Thomson if you're interested, or just turn up, and feel free to bring your lunch.
6th Oct. — Rugby Watching Party: Come one, come all, to watch the "mighty" English fall… That's what is known as a 'taunt' in the sports world, and it was directed towards Will Timmins (note: explanation provided for the uninitiated). Come on up to the Lowery's flat (Flat 10 in the Tyndale House) on Saturday the 6th @14.00 to hurl some sporting insults of your own as we watch England "defend their title" vs. Australia in the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals. Bring a snack or drink to share if you are able (another note: we don't love you enough to provide these for you, but I will gladly help myself to anything you bring). Again, 14.00 on Saturday, the 6th of Oct.
Thanks, Daniel
26 Sep. I need a document notarized. Any ideas as to where I might find a notary public? Not being from the U.K., I'm assuming there is such a thing here. Thanks. Jim Leonard
21 Sept. A couple of us are applying for jobs and have found it helpful to exchange dossiers, give feedback, etc. As well, we're starting to swap literature that might be helpful to various aspects of the job application process. If anyone would like to be part of this informal group and/or meet up sometime to discuss The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher's Life (by Parker Palmer), please drop me a line. -Mary Hom
11 Sept. Hebrew Reading Group. Some of us are planning to meet up once a week for an hour or so to read and translate some scripture from the Hebrew. Exact details will depend on who's interested and what works best for everyone, but it will probably happen over lunch or in the early evening. Basic grammar will be assumed and some preparation beforehand will be expected, but it will be relaxed and not high-powered. Please email Chris Thomson if you're interested.
11Sept. Free Stuff: I have a yoghurt maker, Kenwood Yogurella, to give away. Also a mechanical juicer.
11 Sept. Invitation for tomorrow (12th). Come to Flat 10 (The Lowerys) to watch England v. Russia in a Euro 08 qualifying match (the sport is football). Kick-off is 8pm. Bring light snacks if you want—we have plenty of drinks left from the rugby-watching party and want to get rid of them. Come help us do just that! Email germandanny@gmail.com for questions or more general, athletically-charged taunts.
